'Two to four' new reactors at Borssele
[Financieele Dagblad, 10 September] Peter Boerma, CEO of Delta, has said in an interview that he wants to see "two to four" new reactors at Borssele, with the first operating by 2016. Delta is the 50% owner of the single pressurized water reactor already at the site. Boerma said: "We already invest heavily in solar energy, but the full transition to renewable energy will see other forms of energy used in the meantime. Coal or nuclear energy? Then we opt for the latter." The company is beginning an environmental impact assessment for the current coalition government, which has no firm position on nuclear power. Dutch leaders abandoned a nuclear phase-out position in 2005 and in 2006 published certain conditions for new nuclear build, which would all be met by modern reactor designs.

Finnish chief: Grant permits to all 'willing builders'
[Virtual Finland, 8 September] The Finnish government should grant construction permits to all three contenders in the bid to build the country's sixth nuclear power reactor, according to Mikael Lilius, chief executive of Fortum. Fennovoima, Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) and Fortum have all announced plans to construct new plants, but the government has said that it will only issue a licence for one of them. Speaking to industry publication Energia , Lilius said: "I cannot understand why one should start regulating who can build and who cannot when we have three willing builders." He added, "It has long been said that the industry is underinvesting. Would it not be good if it invested more?"

Ontario reactor bid deadline extended
[The Canadian Press, 26 July] Ontario's energy minister, George Smitherman, has announced that the deadline for reactor vendors to submit bids for two new reactors at the existing Darlington site has been extended. In June, the provincial government asked Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL), Westinghouse and Areva to submit bids by 1 October. However, the deadline has now been extended until the end of 2008. Smitherson said: "Because of the complicated nature of the transaction, there deemed to be warranted some additional time to work our way through those details so that we can continue to ensure proponents who will be bidding in a competitive way." He added that the extension was the result of a consensus request among the companies and the team overseeing the reactor procurement. The Canadian province hopes to have the new reactors operating at Darlington by 2018 as part of its $26 billion nuclear program. Smitherson replaced Gerry Phillips as energy minister last month following a cabinet reshuffle by Premier Dalton McGuinty.
